Ingredients

1 sheet of frozen puff pastry (thawed)

6 ounces sliced ham (preferably mild or honey ham)

6 ounces shredded cheese (such as Gruyère, Swiss, or sharp cheddar)

1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional, for an extra kick)

1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

1 teaspoon dried thyme (optional)

Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Flour, for dusting the surface

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C). Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper for easy cleanup.

Prepare the Puff Pastry: On a clean, lightly floured surface, gently roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet. Aim for a thickness of about 1/8 inch to ensure a perfect rise. Once rolled out, cut the pastry into rectangles measuring approximately 4 inches by 6 inches.

Assemble the Filling: Take each rectangle of pastry and lay a slice of ham on one half. If desired, spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard over the ham for added flavor. Generously sprinkle shredded cheese atop the ham, making sure to leave a small border around the edges for sealing. Add a sprinkle of garlic powder, dried thyme, sea salt, and freshly ground black pepper if you wish to enhance the flavors.

Fold and Seal: Carefully fold the pastry over the filling to create either a triangle or rectangle. Press down along the edges firmly to seal, ensuring no filling escapes during baking. You can use the tines of a fork for a decorative edge or your fingers for a simple seal.

Cut and Twist: Using a sharp knife, make several shallow cuts on the top of each pastry to allow steam to escape during baking. Gently twist each filled pastry from both ends to create a spiral shape, which adds visual interest and ensures even cooking.

Apply Egg Wash: Place the assembled twists onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each one for expansion while baking. Using a pastry brush, generously apply the beaten egg on the tops of each pastry to achieve a golden, shiny finish.

Bake: Transfer the baking sheet to the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the twists are puffed up and a lovely golden brown, keeping a close eye towards the end to prevent over-browning.

Cool and Serve: Once baked, remove the twists from the oven and allow them to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack. Serve warm, perfect as a delightful appetizer or a savory snack.

Prep Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 40 minutes | Servings: 6-8 twists

                    - Presentation Tips: For an elegant display, serve the twists on a rustic wooden board or platter, garnished with fresh herbs or a light drizzle of honey.
