Ingredients

For the Meatballs:

1 lb ground beef (preferably 80/20 for optimal juiciness)

½ cup Italian seasoned breadcrumbs

¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 large egg

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (or 1 tsp dried parsley)

1 tsp onion powder

1 tsp salt

½ tsp black pepper

½ tsp dried oregano

½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional, for added heat)

For the Tomato Sauce:

2 tbsp olive oil

1 small onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes

1 tsp sugar (to balance acidity)

1 tsp salt

½ tsp black pepper

1 tsp dried basil

1 tsp dried oregano

½ cup fresh basil leaves, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Make the Meatballs:

    - In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, parsley (fresh or dried), onion powder, salt, black pepper, oregano, and red pepper flakes (if using).

      - Mix the ingredients gently with your hands or a spatula until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this could make the meatballs tough.

        - Shape the mixture into approximately 1-inch meatballs and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

          Cook the Meatballs:

            - Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

              - Once the oil is hot, add the meatballs in batches to the skillet. Cook them for about 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are golden brown on all sides. They do not need to be fully cooked through at this stage. Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set them aside on a plate.

                Prepare the Tomato Sauce:

                  - In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil and heat it over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 4-5 minutes, until soft and translucent.

                    - Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant, being careful not to let it burn.

                      - Pour in the crushed tomatoes and season with sugar, salt, black pepper, dried basil, and dried oregano. Stir well to combine and bring the sauce to a gentle simmer.

                        Combine Meatballs with Sauce:

                          - Return the browned meatballs to the skillet, nestling them into the sauce to ensure they are well coated.

                            - Cover the skillet and let the meatballs simmer in the sauce over low heat for about 20-25 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld and ensures the meatballs are cooked through.

                              Serve:

                                - Serve the savory meatballs hot, either over a bed of pasta, in a sub sandwich, or simply on their own. Garnish each serving with freshly chopped basil and an additional sprinkle of Parmesan cheese for extra flavor. Enjoy the comforting and heartwarming taste of this delightful dish!
