Ingredients

2 large sweet onions

1 cup buttermilk

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup panko breadcrumbs (for an extra crunchy texture)

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

Cooking spray or light oil for spraying

Instructions

Prepare the Onions: Begin by peeling the onions and slicing them into rings that are approximately ½-inch thick. Carefully separate the onion rings and set them aside on a plate or in a bowl.

Soak in Buttermilk: In a large mixing bowl, pour the buttermilk over the separated onion rings, ensuring they are fully immersed. Allow the rings to soak for at least 30 minutes. This step helps to tenderize the onions and infuse them with flavor.

Prepare the Dry Mix: In a separate bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Whisk the mixture until all ingredients are well blended.

Breading Process: In a third bowl, place the panko breadcrumbs. Remove an onion ring from the buttermilk, allowing any excess liquid to drip off. First, coat the ring in the flour mixture, ensuring it's evenly covered. Dip it back into the buttermilk and then roll it in the breadcrumbs, pressing down gently to help the breadcrumbs stick. Repeat this breading process for all the onion rings.

Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 5 minutes, ensuring it’s fully heated before you begin cooking.

Cook the Onion Rings: Arrange the breaded onion rings in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Make sure to leave enough space between each ring for optimal air circulation. Spray the tops lightly with cooking spray or drizzle with oil for added crispiness.

Air Fry: Cook the onion rings in batches for 10-12 minutes, flipping them halfway through the cooking time. The rings should be golden brown and crispy when finished. If desired, lightly spray with oil again halfway through to enhance crunchiness.

Serve: After cooking, remove the onion rings from the air fryer and allow them to rest for about a minute, which will help retain their crispiness. Serve them warm alongside your favorite dipping sauces, such as ranch dressing or spicy ketchup, for a delightful treat!
