Ingredients

1 loaf of cinnamon raisin bread, cut into 1-inch cubes

6 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1/2 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup raisins (optional)

1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Powdered sugar for serving

Maple syrup for drizzling

Instructions

Prepare the Baking Dish: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Generously grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray, ensuring all surfaces are well-coated to prevent sticking.

Layer the Bread: Spread half of the cinnamon raisin bread cubes evenly across the bottom of the greased baking dish. If you wish to include them, sprinkle half of the raisins and chopped nuts evenly over the bread. Layer the remaining cubes of bread on top, followed by the remaining raisins and nuts.

Make the Custard: In a large mixing bowl, vigorously whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until the mixture is smooth and the brown sugar is fully dissolved.

Combine the Mixtures: Carefully pour the prepared custard mixture evenly over the layered bread in the baking dish. Use a spatula or your hands to gently press down on the bread cubes, ensuring they are thoroughly soaked with the custard mixture.

Chill (Optional): For optimal results, cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and place it in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. This allows the bread to absorb the custard. If preferred, prepare the dish the night before and let it soak overnight for a richer flavor.

Bake: After chilling, remove the baking dish from the refrigerator and uncover it. Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the top is a golden brown color and the custard has set.

Serve: Once baked, allow the French toast bake to cool for about 5-10 minutes before serving. Dust generously with powdered sugar, and serve warm with a drizzle of maple syrup for a delightful finish.

                Prep Time: 20 minutes | Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes | Servings: 8

Presentation Tips: For an inviting display, serve individual portions on plates topped with additional raisins, nuts, or a dusting of cinnamon. Place a small jug of maple syrup on the side for drizzling. Enjoy your delicious and cozy creation!
