Ingredients

For the filling:

6 large apples (preferably Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced

1/4 cup pure maple syrup

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour (or cornstarch for a gluten-free option)

For the topping:

1 cup rolled oats

1/2 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour)

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it is ready for baking.

Prepare the Filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, maple syrup, ground cinnamon, vanilla extract, lemon juice, and flour. Gently toss the apple slices until they are fully coated in the mixture. Pour the coated apples into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, spreading them out evenly for consistent baking.

Make the Topping: In a separate bowl, combine the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, melted butter, ground cinnamon, and salt. Use a fork or your fingers to mix until the ingredients form a crumbly texture. If you choose to include nuts, fold them into the mixture for an added crunch.

Assemble: Evenly distribute the oat topping over the apple filling in the baking dish, ensuring every apple slice is covered for a deliciously uniform final product.

Bake: Place the baking dish in your preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes. You’ll know it’s ready when the topping turns golden brown and the apples are bubbling enthusiastically around the edges.

Cool & Serve: After removing it from the oven, allow the apple crisp to cool for about 10 minutes. Serve it warm, and for an extra decadent treat, top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
