Ingredients

1 pound ziti pasta

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

1 medium onion, finely diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 pound ground beef (or substitute with Italian sausage for enhanced flavor)

2 teaspoons Italian seasoning blend

1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes

1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce

2 cups ricotta cheese

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 large egg

Fresh basil leaves for garnish

Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

Cook the Pasta: In a large pot, bring generously salted water to a rolling boil. Add the ziti and cook according to the package instructions until it reaches al dente texture. Once cooked, drain the pasta and set it aside in a large mixing bowl.

Prepare the Meat Sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, warm the olive oil. Add the diced onions and sauté for about 5 minutes, or until they become translucent and soft. Incorporate the minced garlic and continue to sauté for an additional minute, allowing the flavors to meld and the garlic to become fragrant.

Brown the Meat: Increase the heat slightly and add the ground beef (or sausage) to the skillet. Brown the meat for approximately 7-10 minutes, using a spatula to break it into bite-sized pieces. If necessary, drain any excess fat from the mixture.

Add Tomatoes and Seasoning: Pour in the Italian seasoning, crushed tomatoes, and tomato sauce. Stir to combine and season generously with salt and black pepper to taste. Reduce the heat and let the sauce simmer gently for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Mix Ricotta Filling: In a separate mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, 1 cup of the shredded mozzarella cheese, grated Parmesan cheese, the large egg, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix well until the ingredients are thoroughly combined and creamy.

Combine Ingredients: Transfer the cooked ziti to the meat sauce in the skillet and stir well to ensure each piece of pasta is coated evenly with the rich sauce.

Assemble the Bake: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with a little olive oil. Spread half of the ziti mixture across the bottom of the dish, then layer half of the ricotta filling on top. Repeat this process with the remaining ziti and finish with dollops of the rest of the ricotta filling. Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese on top.

Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil (to prevent the cheese from sticking, lightly spray the underside of the foil with cooking spray). Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. After this time, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling and has reached a beautiful golden brown color.

Garnish and Serve: Allow the baked ziti to cool for a few minutes once out of the oven for easier slicing. Garnish with fresh basil leaves for a pop of color and added aroma. Serve hot, and enjoy every cheesy, delicious bite!

                      - Presentation Tips: For a more elegant presentation, serve the baked ziti in individual ramekins, garnished with additional basil and a sprinkle of Parmesan on top.
